Le scandale Lou Yetu a éclaté sur les réseaux le 19 janvier 2021, à travers le compte Instagram « Balance Ta Start-up ». Lou Yetu, marque de bijoux plébiscitée par de nombreuses consommatrices françaises est dénoncée pour des pratiques abusives sur ses employés et de nombreux mensonges sur les engagements de la marque.
Qu’en est-il de ces pratiques et sont-elles occasionnelles ou bien réellement symptomatiques d’un abus général au sein du monde des start-ups ?

Le compte Instagram a été créé en décembre 2020. Ayant pour but de « dénoncer les abus de la start-up nation », il s’évertue à mettre en lumière les pratiques problématiques ou complètement inacceptables des start-ups françaises.
Chefing, Qapa, Side, Meero, Lydia, Doctolib … Elles sont nombreuses ces start-ups décriées pour leur management abusif ou le sexisme omniprésent.
« Balance Ta Start-up » récupère des témoignages d’internautes et les reposte ensuite à travers stories et posts Instagram.
Jusqu’à présent, le compte Instagram regroupait une audience plutôt confidentielles, les start-ups visées ne faisant par partie des plus connues et médiatisées.
C’est réellement le scandale Lou Yetu qui a fait bondir la notoriété de ce compte d’intérêt public.

La marque et ses engagements
Lou Yetu est une marque française de « bijoux espiègles qui résistent à la vie ». Fondée par Camille Riou en 2015, la marque s’est fait connaître grâce à Instagram, en mettant en oeuvre une belle stratégie de séduction de ses consommatrices …
Elle avance des engagements sur son compte, sous le nombre de 5 :

Si c’est bien Instagram qui a permis à Lou Yetu de se faire connaître, c’est aussi Instagram qui a signé sa chute vertigineuse dans l’opinion publique.
Mais alors, de quoi est accusée cette entreprise ?
Du jour au lendemain, la marque a vu révélé au grand jour la vérité sur ses coulisses.

- « Des messages tous les soirs, et week-end de la part de la Big Boss (sous couvert de « ah bah je savais pas que tu allais répondre ») alors que le ton est vraiment très agressif et urgent »

- « Elle m’a empêché de dormir tous les dimanche elle envoyait des mails dimanche à 22h pour la réunion du lundi matin. Elle a enclenché la dépression chez une employée, elle en a harcelé une autre »
- « La médecine du travail a été alertée par 40 témoignages similaires et a seulement la possibilité d’intervenir à titre de consul. La fondatrice demande à ses employés de faire bonne impression lors des passages de la médecine dans les bureaux. »
Ainsi, c’est majoritairement le comportement de la fondatrice qui est dénoncée. Celle-ci abuserait en effet de son pouvoir pour harceler et pousser à bout ses employés.
Le résultat ? Un turnover extrêmement élevé (les employés ne resteraient en moyenne que 6 mois au sein de l’entreprise), des arrêts maladie à répétition, des licenciements déguisés …
Un comportement qui a choqué une très grande partie de la communauté d’Instagram, qui n’aurait jamais imaginé l’enfer qui pouvait se cacher derrière une marque qui semble pourtant si belle.
Les témoignages se multiplient, apparaissent par dizaines sur le compte de « Balance Ta Start-Up », faisant grandir l’horreur des internautes, qui s’empressent de partager le scandale.
Le résultat est sans appel : la marque perd plus de 20 000 abonnés en moins de 24h, entre le 19 et le 20 janvier !

Un mensonge sur l’origine des produits
En plus de tous les témoignages édifiants sur le management de la fondatrice, qui auraient suffis à eux seuls à créer le scandale, la marque se retrouve aussi épinglée pour avoir menti sur l’origine de ses produits.
Lou Yetu clame haut et fort que ses produits sont fabriqués en France, pour séduire sa clientèle, soucieuse de soutenir des marques locales. La réalité est pourtant tout autre : les produits seraient en effet fabriqués, pour la grande majorité d’entre eux, en Chine et en Thaïlande. L’entreprise se fournirait Rue du Temple, endroit connu pour regrouper de nombreux grossistes de bijoux bas de gamme. La seule chose qui permet à la marque d’appliquer la mention Made in France est l’ajout d’un fermoir sur une chaîne.
La vérité ayant été rétablie sur les dessous de l’entreprise Lou Yetu, la marque ne fait que débuter sa descente aux enfers. À suivre …
II – L’environnement des starts-up, pas si rose que ça ?
Après avoir découvert ce scandale édifiant, on est légitime de se demander si Lou Yetu est une malheureuse exception ou bien si ce cas est symptomatique d’un réel problème qui sévit au sein de la « start-up nation » ?
Les start-ups sont en effet souvent très attirantes vu de l’extérieur : un management innovant, des conditions de travail agréables, des équipes dynamiques, des valeurs d’ouverture et d’inclusivité …
Qui ne visualise pas l’image de l’employé heureux de prendre une pause pour faire quelques parties de baby-foot avec ses collègues ?
Pourtant, comme dans de nombreux milieux, les langues commencent à se délier et à pointer du doigt les problèmes de l’écosystème tech français.
Les scandales se multiplient : avant Louyetu, il y a aussi eu Sigfox ou bien le Slip Français.
Ces deux entreprises ont été dénoncées respectivement pour du sexisme et du racisme. Et elles sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces entreprises décriées pour ce type de pratiques inaceptables.
Le manque de diversité se fait de plus en plus ressentir : en France, seulement 30% de femmes sont créatrices d’entreprise, le frein à l’échec restant un frein important pour l’entrepreneuriat féminin. Les clichés persistent, même au sein de ces entreprises innovantes, et le harcèlement s’y fait ressentir. Un héritage de la culture misogyne qui règne encore dans les grandes écoles de commerce ? Possible.
Ce manque de diversité est bien sûr aussi lié à un problème de racisme. Moqueries, discrimination, remarques déplacées … Les témoignages ne manquent pas.
Les chiffres n’en sont qu’une preuve supplémentaire : aux État-Unis, seulement 1% de l’argent des fonds d’investissement revient à des start-ups portées par des entrepreneurs noirs. Nous ne pouvons qu’imaginer que la France suit cette même tendance. Les minorités y restent très sous-représentées, que ce soit à la tête de ces entreprises, mais aussi dans leurs effectifs.
