Créée en 2006 aux États-Unis dans le but de « faire évoluer le capitalisme », le label B Corp (raccourci de Benefit Corporation) identifie et certifie les entreprises ayant un impact environnemental et social ainsi qu’un fonctionnement transparent et éthique.
Ce mouvement est aujourd’hui fort d’une communauté de plus 3400 entreprises certifiées dans 70 pays. Il convainc notamment de plus en plus dans les pays européens, dont la France, qui a accueilli le label en 2015 et qui compte aujourd’hui une centaine d’entreprises certifiées.
En quoi consiste cette certification ? Comment est-elle délivrée ? Qui sont ces entreprises actrices du changement ?
B Corp, une certification synonyme d’engagement
Une volonté de repenser le succès dans les affaires
« Use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems ».
Cette phrase utilisée par l’ONG indépendante B-Lab, résume bien l’intention de l’organisation lorsqu’elle a créé le label B corp. Celui-ci met les mots sur sa volonté de révéler le pouvoir dont dispose les entreprises et comment celui-ci peut être mis à profit de l’intérêt général. Ces entreprises, notamment les plus grandes, ont en effet de nombreuses ressources qui peuvent leur permettre d’avoir un impact positif sur notre environnement et notre société actuelle.
Reste maintenant à faire en sorte qu’elles prennent la bonne direction et appliquent les dispositions nécessaires à ce changement.
Pour cela, il faut repenser la notion de succès dans les affaires. Là où le profit primait auparavant, on visera maintenant le bien-être commun, la transparence et l’éthique.
Ou comme le résume le slogan de B-Lab : « Ne pas chercher à être la meilleure entreprise du monde, mais à être la meilleure pour le monde ».
Des entreprises triées sur le volet
Afin d’intégrer ce label si prestigieux qu’est devenu B Corp au cours des années, il est nécessaire de répondre à plusieurs critères.
Tout d’abord, l’entreprise doit répondre à un questionnaire évaluant l’impact de sa structure.
Cela lui permettra d’aboutir à une note, traduisant de la façon dont les opérations quotidiennes de l’entreprise créent un impact positif pour ses employés, pour la société et pour l’environnement.
Cette note, baptisée « Overall B Impact Score », peut s’élever jusqu’à 200 points. Les entreprises doivent atteindre un minimum de 80 points pour pouvoir être certifiées B Corp. À titre de comparaison, le score médian des entreprises classiques est de 50,9 points.
Pour obtenir cette note globale, 5 critères sont évalués individuellement :
- La gouvernance : mission, engagement, éthique, transparence …
- Les collaborateurs : sécurité financière, santé, bien-être, sécurité, développement de la carrière, engagement, satisfaction …
- La collectivité : diversité, inclusion, équité, impact économique, création d’emplois, gestion de la chaîne d’approvisionnement …
- L’environnement : impact sur l’environnement (air, eau, terre), transports …
- Les clients : amélioration de la santé et du bien-être, éducation, critères d’investissement …
Le taux de réussite à ce questionnaire s’élève seulement à 5% parmi les 70 000 entreprises qui l’ont tenté. Les B Corp représentent donc une élite parmi toutes ces organisations.
À titre d’exemple, l’entreprise Patagonia a obtenu une note de 151,4 sur 200 dont 16,9 points pour la gouvernance, 20,8 point pour les collaborateurs, 63,8 point pour la collectivité, 43,5 points pour l’environnement et 6,3 points pour les clients.
En résumé, la certification évalue la capacité de l’entreprise à réduire les inégalités, réduire la pauvreté, assurer un environnement plus sain, rendre les communautés plus résiliantes et créer des emplois de meilleure qualité.
Les entreprises sont réévalués tous les 3 ans et sont donc encouragées à améliorer leurs performances.
Chaque année, B Lab sort une list mettant à l’honneur les meilleurs B Corps dans chaque secteur à impact (correspondant aux critères cités précédemment) et dans la globalité (meilleure note totale).
Les entreprises célébrées comme les meilleures de l’année 2019 ont notamment été les suivantes : AlmaNatura (153,8/200), Beneficial State Bank (176/200), BioCarbon Partners (177,3/200), CajaVecina (157,9/200), Dhana Inc. (151,9/200) …

Un label qui s’exporte en France
Aujourd’hui, le label B Corp regroupe plus de 3400 entreprises à travers le monde et ne cesse de prendre de l’ampleur.
Arrivé en France en 2015, il y compte aujourd’hui une centaine de certifiés, parmi lesquels Nature et Découvertes, Veja, Ulule, La Ruche qui dit Oui, Les 2 Vaches, Big Mamma, Phenix, Engie, Blédina, Picture …
“La France est portée par une dynamique très forte : il y a bien sûr la voix des jeunes qui manifestent pour le climat et réclament une transformation en profondeur des entreprises, mais aussi des avancées législatives comme le volet RSE de la loi Pacte (raison d’être des entreprises, entreprise à mission…)”, se réjouit Helle Liautaud, présidente du nouveau B Lab France. Preuve de cette accélération du mouvement B Corp en France : depuis juin dernier, 16 nouvelles structures ont rejoint le mouvement.

Un label aux intérêts multiples
La certification B Corp constitue, pour le public extérieur, une preuve solide d’engagement de l’entreprise envers l’environnement et la société ainsi qu’un gage de transparence et d’éthique.
En cela, B Corp devient un réel atout pour la marque employeur.
Une grande partie des travailleurs d’aujourd’hui n’est plus simplement en recherche d’une simple sécurité financière mais bien d’un travail qui soit réellement en accord avec ses valeurs.
Les jeunes générations ont notamment une image plutôt dégradée de l’entreprise, symbole du capitalisme destructeur. Or, avec des certifications telles que B Corp, ces entreprises ne se présentent plus comme de simples générateurs de profits mais bien comme de réels moyens d’actionner des leviers et d’engager le changement.
L’entreprise séduira ainsi de nouveaux talents par la mission menée et par son engagement.
Mis-à-part le recrutement, l’intégration au sein de la communauté B Corp constitue aussi un moyen de motiver les salariés actuels. Les entreprises peuvent en effet rassembler et impliquer les collaborateurs autour du projet. Leur délivrer des responsabilités, des moyens d’assurer le suivi des 200 questions et des moyens d’agir pour permettre à l’entreprise de progresser.
Cela créera un sentiment d’appartenance et d’accomplissement significatif, à l’heure où les turnover sont en constante augmentation.
