Comme chaque année en février, se déroule le Super Bowl qui est la finale du championnat organisé par la National Football League (NFL), ligue américaine de football américain. Cet évènement fait partie de ceux les plus regardés dans le monde, en effet le Super Bowl fait une audience d’une centaine de millions de téléspectateurs en moyenne et ceci seulement aux Etats-Unis. On comprend donc très rapidement que l’enjeu est important pour les spécialistes du Marketing, car cet évènement offre la possibilité d’atteindre une audience exceptionnellement large qui serait autrement très difficile à atteindre. Et cette année c’est The Weeknd qui a eu l’occasion d’animer la mi-temps avec ses hits « Blinding Lights », « I Can’t Feel My Face », ou encore « The Hills ».
Bien que le Superbowl de cette année ait été très différent des précédents à cause de la pandémie de coronavirus. The Weeknd a utilisé une grande partie du stade et a chanté depuis les gradins — une première — avec son groupe et de nombreux danseurs derrière lui. Il a aussi foulé la pelouse pour interpréter « Blinding Lights » avec des danseurs habillés comme lui.
Cependant ce dimanche 7 février l’audience du Super Bowl n’a pas atteint les sommets des années précédentes avec une chute à 96,4 millions de téléspectateurs aux Etats-Unis (vs 101,3 millions en 2020). On peut donc se demander si le Super Bowl représente toujours un intérêt pour les stars qui foulent le terrain à la mi-temps ? Et qu’en est-il pour la NFL ?

En quoi le Super Bowl représente t-il toujours un intérêt pour les stars ?
Il faut rappeler que la NFL ne rémunère pas les artistes même si elle couvre toutes les dépenses des interprètes ainsi que celles de leur entourage, de leurs techniciens, des membres de leur famille ainsi que leurs amis. Les chanteurs offrent donc une prestation « gratuite ». Or il faut noter que cette année The Weeknd a mis son propre argent : 7 millions de dollars pour faire le show, car c’est un honneur de chanter à la mi-temps. Il succède à Michael Jackson, les Rolling Stones, Madonna, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Shakira et Jennifer Lopez…
Selon Nielsen SoundScan, les artistes qui participent au show connaissent ensuite des hausses significatives des ventes de leurs albums ainsi qu’une augmentation des téléchargements numériques payants de leurs chansons. On comprend donc tout de suite l’intérêt d’animer la mi-temps d’un tel évènement, surtout quand des millions de téléspectateurs le regardent.

En quoi le Super Bowl est-il bien plus qu’une rencontre sportive aux États-Unis ?
Le football américain est le sport le plus suivi aux USA à défaut d’être le plus pratiqué. De l’autre côté de l’Atlantique tout le monde regarde ce sport. Le Super Bowl est bien plus qu’un événement sportif, c’est devenu un grand spectacle incontournable, avec notamment le show et le concert à la mi-temps. Chaque année, l’événement se renouvelle et la NFL met tout en œuvre afin que le spectacle qu’elle propose soit intéressant pour les fans de football américain mais également pour les amateurs de show qui ne sont pas forcément fans du sport.
Au final, le Super Bowl est-il encore un événement sportif ? Depuis très longtemps, c’est devenu un spectacle sportif. La construction des événements de sport aux USA n’a pas été la même qu’en France. Chez nous, le gouvernement aide beaucoup les fédérations. Aux Etats-Unis c’est différent, la construction s’est faite au niveau scolaire et au niveau privé. La NFL, c’est une ligue privée qui s’est montée et qui a rapidement dû faire face à des contraintes économiques. Pour y répondre, il a fallu être rentable, la ligue en est venue à proposer un événement très lucratif. Le cœur de l’événement reste évidemment le football américain mais la NFL a construit tout autour un grand show pour en faire un spectacle populaire au-delà du sport. La ligue utilise donc l’influence de stars mondialement connus, ces dernières interprètent tous leurs hits tout en proposant un show très souvent spectaculaire. Grâce à cela, la finale de Super Bowl attire de nombreux et nouveaux téléspectateurs et permet d’augmenter le chiffre d’affaires.
Encore à l’heure actuelle, la finale du Super Bowl a autant d’intérêt pour les stars que pour la NFL. En effet, d’après les derniers chiffres, l’évènement aurait généré 484,7 millions de dollars de recettes (vs 448,7 millions de dollars en 2020). On imagine ainsi que cet évènement n’est pas prêt de s’arrêter.
