Comme vous le savez, Netflix est une plateforme de streaming reconnue dans le monde entier. Elle a su faire ses preuves depuis sa création en 1997. Initialement, Netflix était uniquement présente dans le secteur de service en ligne de location et d’achat de DVD livrés à domicile. Elle a ensuite proposé la location moyennant un abonnement mensuel. Cet avantage concurrentiel lui aura permis d’en faire une force, et d’être ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui : une multinationale américaine au 200 millions d’abonnés en 2020. Aujourd’hui, dans cet article, nous traiterons de Netflix Games, le nouvel univers de Netflix, soit celui des jeux vidéo.
I / Comment Netflix est devenue ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui ? De l’ascension fulgurante à la création de Netflix Games.
Comme je le disais précédemment, Netflix a été crée en 1997 par Reed Hastings et Marc Randolph. Son domaine a d’abord été celui du service en ligne de location et d’achat de DVD livrés à domicile. Cependant, l’entreprise a vite compris que pour se différencier de la concurrence, il fallait proposer une innovation. Celle-ci a donc été la location par abonnement mensuel en 2007. Ce fut un énorme succès, et Netflix a su évincer la concurrence. La multinationale américaine est donc devenue pionnière dans le secteur de la vidéo à la demande par abonnement.
Son cœur de cible sont les jeunes adultes de 18 à 25 ans. Dans le choix du catalogue de diffusion, la génération des 18-25 ans d’aujourd’hui peut trouver du contenu qu’elle a vu dans son enfance. C’est une manière d’utiliser l’affect des gens pour provoquer en eux un sentiment d’appartenance et de proximité.
Depuis quelques années, Netflix s’est lancée dans la distribution d’un grand nombre de films et de séries télévisées, des créations originales à laquelle elle consacre des investissements de plus en plus importants. En effet, vous connaissez tous Lupin, la Casa de Papel, Stranger Things ou encore dernièrement Squid Game. Tous font un énorme succès, ce qui accroît la demande d’abonnement sur la plateforme pour obtenir 200 millions d’abonnés sur Netflix 2020, dont 16 millions de nouveaux abonnés cette année-là.
Cependant, avec le confinement les abonnements sont en baisse. Selon une étude réalisée par Harris Interactive, Netflix perd plus d’abonnés qu’il n’en gagne sur le deuxième trimestre 2021 en France. Une part de marché de 40% au premier trimestre contre 37% au second.
Comment cela s’explique ? Récemment, nous avons vu naître de nombreux concurrents de taille face à Netflix. Nous pouvons citer Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu qui est reconnu aux USA, OCS ou bien récemment en France : Salto la plateforme de streaming de TF1.
Si nous devions en faire un classement, nous avons Netflix avec 214 millions d’abonnés. En seconde position, nous retrouvons Prime Video avec 175 millions d’abonnements. Disney+ est en troisième position avec 118 millions d’abonnés dont 60 millions d’abonnés gagnés en 10 mois. Enfin, nous avons la plateforme américaine Hulu avec 43 millions d’abonnements.
Pour faire face à la concurrence, Netflix a décidé de développer le brand stretching avec le Netflix Games.
II / Qu’est-ce que le Brand Stretching ? Comment Netflix l’applique sur Netflix Games ?
Le Brand Stretching est un principe selon lequel une marque utilise son nom pour lancer un nouveau produit dans une nouvelle catégorie. L’exemple qui illustre parfaitement cette définition est le géant Amazon avec Prime Video.
Le Brand Stretching possède de nombreux atouts pour l’entreprise puisqu’il permet de profiter de la notoriété ainsi que de l’image de qualité associées à la marque, augmenter les chiffres de manière rapide tout en modernisant la marque afin qu’elle ne disparaisse pas à long terme. Enfin, la solution est moins coûteuse et risquée que si l’entreprise devait créer une nouvelle marque.
Netflix l’a donc appliqué sur Netflix Games en proposant des jeux vidéo sur ses créations originales comme sur des jeux classiques. Netflix propose donc un nouveau produit, celui de Netflix Games, dans le monde des jeux vidéo.
III / Netflix Games, un nouveau tournant pour la multinationale américaine ?
Comme vous avez pu le voir en 2018, le film Bandersnatch de la série à succès BlackMirror a fait un énorme buzz. En effet, en tant que spectateur, vous avez la possibilité de prendre des décisions pour le personnage principal. Ce premier film interactif permet de contrôler l’histoire en choisissant la continuité de l’épisode à travers plusieurs choix. Évidemment, chaque fin est différente selon le choix que vous choisissez. Vous avez la possibilité d’avoir 5 “grandes” fins différentes pour ce film interactif. Bandersnatch a le fonctionnement d’un jeu vidéo de simulation et de jeux de rôle. Pour l’anecdote, le film est également basé sur un projet de jeu vidéo.
De nos jours, nous retrouvons sur Netflix de nombreux films interactifs tels que : Sauve qui peut (You VS Wild), Headspace ou encore Baby Boss pour les plus jeunes. Ce phénomène est grandissant. Je pense donc que Netflix a pu interpréter un nouveau segment à développer…
Depuis cet été, Netflix a recruté Mike Verdu, l’ancien vice-président de la division mobile d’Electronic Art et ancien vice-président de la cellule de Réalité Virtuelle de Facebook. Également, Netflix a effectué le rachat du développeur et éditeur de jeux vidéo : Night School Studio à l’origine des jeux Oxenfree et Afterparty. Sur ce fait, Netflix a donc pour ambition de développer des jeux vidéo, et c’est ce qu’elle a fait : Netflix Games est née.
Netflix Games est disponible sur smartphones et tablettes Android et iOS depuis le 9 novembre 2021 en France ! En effet, Netflix Games a été testé dans toute l’Europe : commercialisé en Pologne puis par la suite en Italie et en Espagne avant d’arriver en France. Ce produit est accessible uniquement aux abonnés Netflix. En effet, pour pouvoir jouer aux jeux vidéo, il faut utiliser vos codes Netflix classiques. Les jeux sont entièrement gratuits.
À noter que les jeux sont soumis aux conditions générales d’utilisation de Netflix. De ce fait, les profils “Jeunesses” n’y ont pas accès. Il existe, pour l’instant, 6 jeux d’arcades de type Hyper Casual Games (HCG). Avec ce type de jeu, vous avez comme exemple Doodle Jump ou encore Flappy Bird. À noter que les HCG représentent 59% des jeux installés sur Android.
Également, Netflix Games propose 2 jeux basés sur l’univers de Stranger Things. À long terme, l’objectif étant de proposer exclusivement des jeux basés sur les programmes Netflix.
III / Quels sont les objectifs de Netflix Games ? Quels sont les avis des internautes face à ce nouveau produit Netflix ?
Pour Netflix Games, nous retrouvons différents objectifs principaux et précis. Le premier étant de renforcer la fidélité de ses abonnés en leur offrant de la nouveauté et un sentiment d’exclusivité. En effet, Netflix souhaite répondre à la baisse des abonnements. Pour cela, elle a su développer des jeux vidéo afin que les internautes puissent patienter entre les sorties des saisons suivantes tout en restant dans l’univers de leur série préférée.
Pour le second objectif, Netflix souhaite se différencier de la concurrence SVOD (Subscription Video On Demand) en se saisissant du marché des jeux vidéo. En effet, le marché des jeux vidéo est en hausse depuis le confinement (+ 20% entre 2019 et 2020) et représente 57 milliards de dollars, soit le marché plus important que le cinéma et la musique combinées.
Pour finir, le dernier objectif principal est de se différencier de la concurrence des jeux mobiles en proposant des jeux inédits tout en restant sur la catégorie freemium.
Pour conclure, Netflix Games est un produit innovant et surprenant pour nous utilisateurs. En effet, très peu de communication a été réalisée sur Netflix suite à la sortie de ce nouveau produit. Cette absence de communication semble voulue puisque l’offre n’est pas assez pertinente pour le moment. De nombreux internautes ont vu plus de côtés négatifs que positifs.
Par exemple, nous pouvons noter que :
- L’offre est vu comme trop limitée
- Les jeux trop basiques et pas différenciants
- Les jeux décevants, inaboutis, font petits studios indépendants, ont un aspect très vieillissant.
- Certains préféreraient que Netflix développe de nouvelles productions plutôt que de développer des jeux.
- Concurrence : Apple arcade, jeux proposés par Apple exclusivement aux utilisateurs IOS (exclusivité). Les jeux sont de meilleurs qualités.
