Les lignes incurvées du célèbre trottoir de Copacabana, avec son motif « large mer », est connu dans le monde entier. Lorsqu’elles ont été implantées, en 1905, elles étaient moins sinueuses et avaient une orientation perpendiculaire par rapport à la plage.
Tout a été apporté du Portugal : à la fois les pierres et le travail !
Au début des années 1930, après une forte tempête qui détruit la quasi-totalité du trottoir, ce dernier est refait, cette fois avec les vagues parallèles à la mer.
Dans les années 70, la grande réforme conçue par l’architecte paysagiste, plasticien et mosaïste d’exception Roberto Burle Marx fut réalisée.
Sur le chantier central de l’avenue, Roberto Burle Marx a innové dans le pavage, en utilisant des pierres portugaises de trois couleurs – blanc, noir et rouge – avec lesquelles il a dessiné ces compositions plastiques caractéristiques de ses toiles au sol. Le paysagiste est considéré comme un grand mosaïste contemporain. Outre les trottoirs – et quels trottoirs ! – il réalisa de nombreux panneaux artistiques avec des inserts en verre.
