Qu’est-ce que le Nutri-Score ?
Apparu en France en 2017, le Nutri-Score représente un système d’étiquetage des produits de la grande consommation basé sur une échelle de notation allant de A à E ainsi qu’un code couleurs allant du vert au rouge selon la qualité nutritionnelle de l’aliment. En résumé, plus l’aliment est trop gras, trop sucré, trop salé, plus le curseur deviendra rouge.
Le Nutri-Score est un logo institutionnel conçu par Santé Publique France, dans le cadre du Programme National Nutrition Santé. L’objectif du Nutri-Score est de permettre au consommateur de maîtriser son alimentation et donc de mieux manger. Pour cela, le dispositif vise à rendre plus visible et compréhensible l’étiquetage nutritionnel des produits alimentaires et donc lutter contre le phénomène d’obésité qui est en constante augmentation.
Seulement, le Nutri-Score est pour le moment facultatif, en raison de la réglementation européenne actuelle. Son caractère non-obligatoire rend la mesure plus optionnelle pour les géants de la grande consommation. Deux ans après son apparition, le Nutri-Score n’est présent que sur 5% des produits vendus en grande distribution selon l’association Que Choisir.
Le Nutri-Score, victime d’un lobbying agroalimentaire
Entièrement accepté par une bonne trentaine d’entreprises qui affichent le système de notation sur le packaging de leurs produits, le Nutri-Score s’est également fait des ennemies. Selon un rapport de l’ONG Corporate Europe Observatory, l’industrie agroalimentaire aurait dépensé un milliard d’euros visant à empêcher la diffusion de ce projet de feux tricolores. Coca-Cola, Unilever, Pepsi, Mondelez ou ceux que l’on appelle les « big six » combattent depuis toujours toutes obligations d’ajouter des renseignements nutritionnels sur leurs produits. Les géants de la consommation alimentaire ont essayé de passer outre le logo officiellement choisi par la France en créant leur propre logo : le Nutricouleurs. Basé sur les mêmes couleurs, ce système d’étiquetage propre au « big six » vient semer la confusion et pourrait permettre aux fabricants de faire passer leurs produits pour plus sain qu’ils ne le sont en réalité selon l’organisation Foodwatch.
En effet, le Coca-Cola possède un Nutri-score de catégorie E, mais un Nutricouleurs principalement vert, excepté pour le sucre. Ce logo leur permet donc de modifier la perception du consommateur vis-à-vis du produit en question et tirer l’avantage d’une classification alimentaire.

Un atout pour les produits bien notés
Si l’objectif premier du Nutri-Score est d’informer et de sensibiliser les acheteurs face à la consommation agroalimentaire, il représente également un levier stratégique pour les industriels. En effet, d’après une étude réalisée par le panéliste Nielsen, les 92 000 produits qui affichent les notes A ou B ont vu leur chiffre d’affaires augmenter d’environ 1%. Les industriels y voient là un avantage concurrentiel de taille et souhaitent gagner des parts de marché en proposant des produits plus sains. A contrario, l’étude a également démontré que les produits notés en D ou E voient leur chiffre d’affaires considérablement diminuer.
14% des consommateurs accordent de l’importance au Nutri-score dans le choix de leur produit. Ce chiffre devrait augmenter dans les années à venir.
L’obligation
Après avoir été rejeté en 2018 suite aux pressions de lobbying, le Nutri-Score fait, aujourd’hui, encore débat auprès de la Commission européenne. Afin de faire accélérer les procédures mais aussi de se faire entendre, plusieurs associations de consommateurs européennes ont lancé une pétition pour rendre obligatoire l’étiquetage Nutri-Score. Selon la législation européenne, il leur faut un million de signatures pour faire réagir l’exécutif européen.
A contrario, l’assemblée nationale a voté, début 2019, l’obligation d’afficher le Nutri-Score sur tous les supports publicitaires pour des produits alimentaires. Une mesure qui fait avancer le débat et appuie la crédibilité de ce système d’étiquetage. Mais le travail est encore long pour voir apparaître le Nutri-Score sur l’intégralité de nos courses.
