Pourtant, pour les jeunes, obtenir des « J’aime » pour des photos, des messages, des commentaires sur les réseaux sociaux peut apporter un énorme sentiment d’accomplissement et de boost de confiance en soi.
Mais cette quête quotidienne de validation pourrait-elle déclencher des pensées négatives sur l’image corporelle ? Cette incessante manie de se comparer aux photos des autres peut-elle amener un jeune à se sentir mal dans sa peau ?
Comment Instagram a changé les codes ?
Apparu en 2010, c’est aujourd’hui l’une des applications les plus utilisées avec une moyenne par jour de 30 minutes passées à scroller le fil d’actualité et chatter en ligner.

Mais il n’y a pas que l’environnement qui évolue sous le regard d’Instagram. Plus d’un milliard de personnes à travers le monde disposent d’un compte sur le réseau social, et la moitié s’y connecte quotidiennement. Dans quel but ?
Instagram, le corps parfait
De base il faut être conscient que sur Instagram, les comptes les plus suivis chez les jeunes sont souvent des influenceurs qui affichent leurs corps sans arrêt. Les jeunes cherchent de l’inédit, de l’extraordinaire et retrouvent ça chez les influenceurs aux corps hors du commun (musculature, minceur, formes généreuses etc). Il est donc naturel pour les plus jeunes d’associer ces corps à un standard de beauté qu’ils doivent avoir atteindre.
« Instagram est un réseau de représentation, explique Elsa Godart, psychanalyste. On y va pour poster des photos et ainsi créer du lien, par exemple en partageant des photos d’une soirée entre amis ou notre nouveau rouge à lèvres, ou bien on y va parce que l’on cherche à attirer le regard d’autrui pour se rassurer sur sa propre apparence. ». Pour moi, dans la citation de Elsa Godart, la 1ère utilisation d’Instagram est l’utilisation de base, celle utilisée au départ sur l’application (poster des photos et créer du lien) et la 2ème utilisation est ce pourquoi nous allons sur Instagram de nos jours.
Il suffit de taper « Instagram estime de soi » sur un moteur de recherche pour voir apparaître des titres plus alarmants les uns que les autres : « Instagram serait le pire réseau social pour la santé mentale des jeunes » (Les Inrocks), « Design de soi : pourquoi cherche-t-on à être parfaite sur Instagram ? » (Marie-Claire) ou encore « Pourquoi Instagram nous met la pression ? » (Elle Belgique).
Malgré des mouvements prônant l’acceptation de soi (Body Positive ou le hastag #instagramvsreality) qui montre à quoi ressemble un influenceur dans la vie courante, Instagram reste le réseau des photos parfaites, d’un monde où tout le monde mène une vie de voyages, de soirées et où poster une photo de toi en maillot de bain avec un petit bidou risque de ne pas le faire. Se rendre sur ce réseau social amène à se comparer, y poster des photos, à se soumettre au regard des autres.
Le besoin de reconnaissance, une addiction
Reste qu’en posant des photos de soi sur Instagram, on cherche à obtenir de la reconnaissance et l’approbation de nos compères.
- « Je ne suis pas sûr que cette nouvelle coupe de cheveux m’aille, je vais poster en story une photo de moi voir les retours que j’ai sur ma nouvelle couleur ».

Si on cherche un autre regard sur nous-même pour nous rassurer, on le trouvera forcément en ligne, à n’importe quelle heure. Les réseaux sociaux ne sont pas faits pour offrir du réconfort, mais on s’y tourne volontiers quand on doute de soi.
Mais c’est exactement à ce moment-là qu’on rentre dans un cercle vicieux. L’utilisation quotidienne d’Instagram va créer des complexes, souvent peu fondés, donc nous postons une photo ou story pour obtenir une reconnaissance mais quelques jours plus tard on va se découvrir un nouveau complexe et ainsi de suite.
Comme précédemment cité, Instagram a vu son utilisation changée de but, à savoir partager des photos, Instagram est voué aux gémonies par ceux qui attendent de lui qu’ils les rassurent sur leur valeur. Pourtant, ainsi que le souligne Frédéric Fanget, psychiatre et psychothérapeute spécialiste de l’estime de soi, « le regard des autres ne suffit pas à développer l’estime de soi, ça n’en est en réalité qu’une petite composante. Un rapport différent selon notre niveau d’estime de soi
Les réseaux sociaux ne sont donc pas là pour apporter du réconfort, mais beaucoup les utilisent ainsi. Or, si le réseau social est le même pour tous, tout le monde ne le perçoit pas de la même manière selon son rapport à soi-même.
- Quand notre estime de soi est bonne, ça ne change rien d’aller sur Instagram. On ne s’intéresse pas au jugement que les autres portent sur nous.
- Si notre estime de soir est moyenne, ça peut aider, dans la mesure où les compliments vont être appréciées.
