Qui est KAWS ?
Brian Donelly aka KAWS est né en 1974 dans le New Jersey. Diplômé d’art visuel, il commence à travailler pour Disney où il a la chance de peindre les fonds des films animés à succès comme les 101 Dalmatiens. Ce détail est important car il entretient toujours un rapport assez spécial avec la compagnie (cf. le « Companion » plus bas). En même temps, il commence aussi une carrière d’artiste graffiti et dans les 90’s s’installe à New York City pour profiter de l’immensité d’un nouveau terrain de jeux. À partir de ce moment, il commence à se focaliser sur la peinture d’images subversives et en place sur les abri-bus, les cabines téléphoniques et les panneaux publicitaires en tous genre. Il commence à gagner une énorme notoriété et ces pubs détournées deviennent alors incontournables.
Une notoriété mondiale
Vers la fin des 90’s, KAWS jouit de sa nouvelle popularité et de nouvelles opportunités s’offrent à lui. Étant un touche à tout et un vrai passionné il s’attaque ensuite au streetwear. Il design alors jouets et vêtements pour les plus grandes marques : Original Fake, A Bathing Ape, Undercover, Kung Faux, Nike, Vans ou encore Comme des Garçons. Début des années 2000, il continue ses détournements et retravaille pas mal de shows TV et personnages de Cartoons comme les Simpsons, les Schtroumpfs, Bob l’éponge ou même le bonhomme Michelin.
KAWS s’est ensuite dirigé vers les peintures acryliques et les sculptures. Sa sculpture la plus connue est celle de son personnage au crâne apparent dénommé « Companion ». On peut clairement remarquer qu’il s’est servi de Mickey Mouse comme silhouette de base et a orné le visage par des ossements. Il est aussi amené à designer et produire en édition limitée des figurines. Ces jouets sont devenus des véritables objets de collection/décoration dans le monde entier et surtout au Japon, pays grand amateur de jouets, qui compte des figures de proue dans cet art telles que Takashi Murakami).
On retrouve aussi ce fameux « companion » en illustration de l’album Deluxe 808s & Heartbreak de Kanye West car oui KAWS travaille aussi avec les rappeurs. Cette diversité dans son travail et ce style à part lui ont permis d’exposer dans les plus belles galeries du monde. L’ensemble de ses œuvres fait actuellement de lui un des artistes contemporains les plus talentueux de son époque.
