Aux États-Unis, les tornades meurtrières remettent en cause la politique de sécurité d’Amazon

A partir du 10 décembre 2021, des tornades dévastatrices ont ravagé une partie du centre et du sud-est des États-Unis. Parmi les 90 victimes recensées au 15 décembre, on compte six employés d’Amazon, morts sous les décombres du hangar de leur entreprise à Edwardsville, dans l’Illinois.
« Tornado Alley », littéralement « l’allée des tornades », ont démontré les violences de leurs vents dans certaines régions des Etats-Unis et, par leurs ravages, ont remis en causes la gestion de la sécurité des employés de certaines grandes compagnies.
Le géant du e-commerce en ligne, Amazon, est alors accusé de ne pas protéger suffisamment ses employés après que six travailleurs ont été tués vendredi lors de l’effondrement du toit du dépôt d’Edwardsville, où ils travaillaient.
« Si les catastrophes naturelles ne sont pas contrôlables, les protocoles de préparation et de sécurité d’Amazon le sont. Cette catastrophe remet en question les résultats d’Amazon en matière de sécurité des travailleurs et de normes de construction », a insisté Warehouse Workers for Justice.
Le fondateur d’Amazon, Jeff Bezos, s’est alors exprimé sur Twitter de la situation, sans pour autant convaincre de sa sincérité : « Les nouvelles d’Edwardsville sont tragiques. Nous avons le cœur brisé par la perte de nos coéquipiers là-bas, et nos pensées et nos prières accompagnent leurs familles et leurs proches ».
Alors que la veille, quelques heures à peine après le drame, ce dernier postait une photo de son équipe « spatiale » Blue Origin, avec la légende suivante : « Un équipage heureux ce matin dans le centre d’entraînement… »

Ainsi, de nombreuses plaintes ont été déposées sur le forum interne de l’entreprise, rapporte The Intercept.
Des lois de sécurité des travailleurs bloquées par les grandes entreprises
D’après le magazine belge « Solidaire », une fois mis au courant de la situation, les employés d’Amazon avaient demandé à pouvoir quitter les lieux avant l’arrivée de tornades, mais leurs supérieurs les ont avertis d’un potentiel licenciement s’ils quittaient leur lieu de travail.
Depuis le début de l’année 2021, un projet de loi de l’Illinois nommé « Illinois Employee Security Act » doit protéger la classe travailleuse en précisant que le licenciement est interdit lorsqu’un travailleur refuse « de travailler dans des conditions dont celui-ci pense raisonnablement quelles l’exposent, ainsi que les autres employés ou le public, à un risque déraisonnable pour la santé ou la sécurité ».
Depuis des mois, ces lois visant à protéger les travailleurs en cas de forces majeures, comme les tornades, sont bloquées par des grandes entreprises, dont Amazon.
Un drame qui révèle d’importantes failles
Un SMS envoyé par Larry Virden à sa femme, juste avant de décéder : « Amazon won’t let us leave » (« Amazon ne nous laissera pas partir »).
Un message révélateur du comportement d’Amazon vis-à-vis de ses employés démontre de la légèreté sur la situation prise par les dirigeants d’Amazon, mais surtout démontre le non-respect d’Amazon de certaines règles de sécurité pourtant essentielles.
En effet, le drame met en lumière l’une des règles (très controversée) imposées par le groupe à ses employés : ces derniers ont interdiction d’avoir et d’utiliser un téléphone portable sur leur lieu de travail. Malgré l’assouplissement de cette politique pendant la pandémie, elle est progressivement rétablie dans tous les sites d’Amazon.
Les employés craignent aujourd’hui que cette interdiction les prive d’informations vitales et les empêche de joindre les secours en cas de besoin. « Après ces décès, il est hors de question que je compte sur Amazon pour assurer ma sécurité », a déclaré un employé à Bloomberg.
Une politique de gestion interne de ses salariés controversée créant une méfiance des employés envers Amazon.
Cette politique d’interdiction des téléphones sur le lieu de travail est justifiée par le groupe comme impactant négativement sur la productivité des salariés, et par conséquent, sur la rentabilité d’Amazon. Une décision qui montre une fois de plus que les grands groupes comme Amazon font passer le profit avant la sécurité de ses employés. « Une fois de plus, Amazon fait passer ses résultats financiers avant la vie de ses employés. Exiger que les employés travaillent pendant une alerte à la tornade aussi importante que celle-ci est inexcusable », a réagi Stuart Appelbaum, président du syndicat du commerce RWDSU, le lendemain du drame.
Une règle fondamentale pourtant essentielle pour créer une confiance des employés et donc une satisfaction amenant à une meilleur productivité naturelle des employés et une implication dans le travail et les valeurs de l’entreprise. Un thème que les grands groupes oublient trop souvent.
