Depuis maintenant plusieurs années, les termes « vegan » et « cruelty free » se font une place aussi bien dans nos produits alimentaires que dans ceux de notre quotidien. En effet, les consommateurs sont de plus en plus alertes en ce qui concerne leur consommation. C’est pourquoi les marques tentent de répondre à ces nouveaux besoins en proposant des produits sans matière d’origine animale et respectueux du bien-être des animaux.
« Vegan » « cruelty free », mais késaco ?
Le véganisme se résume à un véritable style de vie. En effet, être vegan ne se limite pas seulement à un régime excluant les produits alimentaires d’origine animale (viande, poisson, lait, œufs, …), en effet les vegans évitent également toutes formes de cruauté animale pour leurs autres achats non-alimentaires (cuir, laine, fourrure).
Pour ce qui est du terme « cruelty free » il signifie « sans cruauté ». Un label « Cruelty Free and Vegan by PETA » pour les produits cosmétiques a été créé pour garantir aux consommateurs que les entreprises utilisant ce label n’effectuent aucuns tests sur les animaux que ce soit pour les ingrédients ou les produits finis. Il garantit également grâce à la mention « vegan » l’absence de matière d’origine animale dans les produits estampillés de ce label.
Comment remplacer les matières d’origine animale ?
Les marques regorgent d’ingéniosité pour créer de nouvelles matières afin de devenir plus « éthique » aux yeux des consommateurs.
Dans l’industrie de la mode, de nombreuses enseignes ont décidé de suivre ce courant vegan et sans cruauté animale. On retrouve, par exemple la marque française de baskets Veja, qui après 5 ans de recherche, a réussi à créer un cuir vegan (le C.W.L.) qui est une alternative au cuir traditionnel. Il est composé de toile de coton enduite à 50 % de déchets de maïs issus de l’agroalimentaire.
Une autre alternative au cuir existe : le Piñatex. Comme son nom l’indique, c’est un cuir végétal issu de fibres d’ananas. Il a été mis au point par Carmen Hijosa, une créatrice espagnole. Il est désormais utilisé dans de nombreux produits : vêtements, accessoires, décoration. On retrouve, par exemple une collaboration avec la marque Hugo Boss qui a créé une paire de chaussures pour hommes à base de Piñatex et utilisant des teintures à base de plantes.
Comment bien s’informer pour éviter les arnaques ?
Bien que certaines marques aient des intentions louables, certaines n’hésitent pas à s’engouffrer dans ce juteux filon en profitant de la crédulité de certains consommateurs.
Par exemple dans l’industrie cosmétique, un produit labellisé « vegan » ne veut pas automatiquement dire qu’il est bon pour notre organisme. En effet, les cosmétiques « vegan » peuvent très bien intégrer dans leur composition des produits non-biologiques et non-naturels. C’est pourquoi il est important de vérifier la liste d’ingrédients afin de s’assurer qu’aucune substance à risque est présente telle que : les parabènes, les silicones, les dérivés de pétrochimie, ….
Pour vous éclairer sur les ingrédients présents dans vos cosmétiques, il existe un moteur de recherche INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetics Ingrédients) afin de savoir la toxicité de l’ingrédient en question.
L’organisme PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) met à disposition une base de données en ligne qui permet de vérifier quelles entreprises sont « cruelty free » mais aussi « vegan ». L’application mobile « Bunny Free » disponible sur Android et iOS permet également d’accéder à cette base de données afin de vérifier l’engagement des marques auprès du bien-être animal.
Ainsi, vous en savez plus sur ce nouveau mode de consommation plus éthique envers le bien-être animal !
