« BIG PROBLEMS REQUIRE BIG SOLUTIONS » *
Chaque année, des millions de tonnes de plastique s’engagent dans les océans principalement à partir des rivières. Le plastique traverse les océans et est l’un des plus grands problèmes environnementaux de notre époque, touchant plus de 600 espèces marines. En effet, une fois emprisonné dans un tourbillon, le plastique se décompose lentement en microplastiques et est confondu avec de la nourriture par la vie marine. Selon une étude menée en collaboration avec Deloitte, les coûts économiques annuels liés à la pollution par le plastique marin sont estimés entre 6 et 19 milliards de dollars américains. La pollution plastique n’impacte pas seulement la l’écosystème marin, en effet elle transporte également des polluants toxiques dans la chaîne alimentaire – une chaîne alimentaire qui inclut les êtres humains.
Pour résoudre cet important problème écologique, il est non seulement nécessaire d’endiguer l’afflux mais aussi de nettoyer ce qui s’est déjà accumulé.
C’est pourquoi, cet organisme à but non lucratif met au point des technologies afin de débarrasser les océans du plastique. Leur équipe conçoit et met au point des systèmes pour nettoyer les déchets plastiques qui polluent déjà nos océans ainsi que des dispositifs qui interceptent le plastique qui circule entre les rivières et les océans.
Quel est l’impact de The Ocean Cleanup ?
Leurs modèles indiquent qu’un déploiement complet du système pourrait nettoyer 50% du vortex de déchets du Pacifique Nord (Great Pacific garbage patch) en cinq ans. La recherche montre que la majorité du plastique se trouve dans les gyres qui sont des zones dans les océans, où différents courants marins convergent les uns vers les autres et où se forment d’énormes tourbillons permanents. Dans le cadre de cette mission de lutte contre la pollution plastique en milieu marin, The Ocean Cleanup prévoit également de vendre des produits fabriqués à partir de ces déchets récoltés. Ils viennent notamment de présenter leur tout premier produit : une paire de lunettes de soleil.

Chaque paire, recyclable, est fabriquée à partir de plastiques récupérés dans ce fameux vortex de déchets du Pacifique nord. Chaque monture est également associée à des lentilles polarisées et à des charnières en acier inoxydable. Ces lunettes sont livrées avec un étui fabriqué à partir de composants recyclés et avec une pochette qui elle provient de bouteilles en PET recyclées. 100% des profits sont dédiés à la poursuite des opérations de nettoyage des océans. Conçu en Californie par Yves Béhar et fabriqué en Italie par Safilo, c’est probablement la façon la plus élégante de débarrasser les océans du plastique.

L’ensemble du processus a été suivi, tracé et audité par un organisme de certification indépendant : DNV GL. Pour ces lunettes de soleil, The Ocean Cleanup a également compensé les émissions de combustible au cours de la campagne offshore, du développement du produit ainsi que de sa production.
